Education is Mama Respond's preliminary response, as we observe the lack of decency and dignity that special needs children face within the education space.
It was evident that the absence of a conducive learning environment led to a regression in the children's milestones and posed potential health risks for their already compromised bodies.
Addressing these issues required implementing segregated classes and categorising different special needs categories to ensure individualised attention for each child.
To address these challenges, Mama Respond embarked on a comprehensive approach.
We identified each child in the unit's specific needs and challenges, categorising their special needs and developing potential interventions tailored to their requirements.
Through this process, we identified children who did not necessarily need to remain in the unit.
They were successfully integrated into the regular school with appropriate intervention, significantly reducing congestion within the unit.
Recognising the need for an enhanced learning environment and a disability-friendly space that accommodated the diverse categories of children, Mama Respond undertook the ambitious project of building a dedicated special needs unit block.
This facility now comprises three classrooms, a therapy or assessment room, a teachers and administrators staff room, a home economics/life skills room, and a disability-friendly dining and common room.
Furthermore, the unit includes ambulant and accessible disability-friendly washrooms.
The successful realisation of this project was made possible through close collaboration and support from the teachers and school administrators.
